Three clusters, one machine
By now you've seen each cluster on its own.
But none of them move alone. They're three outputs of a single machine, and the machine's control knob is money. Here's the whole frame as one diagram:
Money creation (Macro) → capital flows → into the scarce/scarce assets (Bitcoin, AI infrastructure) → constrained by physical reality (energy, chips) → feedback into the next round of money decisions.
The term refers to this: everything valuable in the current era is a derivative of two inputs — money and intelligence. Bitcoin expresses the scarcity on the money side. AI expresses the deflation on the intelligence side. Macro is where the raw money is created. Read all three together and you can explain — and anticipate — movements that no single cluster can explain alone.
The four bridges
Sometimes the connections feel abstract. Here they are as four concrete mechanisms, so you can see them in real market events:
- Macro → Bitcoin. (Liquidity bridge.) When the Fed cuts rates and M2 grows, cheap money looks for yield and flows into high-beta scarce assets. Bitcoin is the flagship. You can literally watch a rate-cut cycle "light up" the crypto market. This is the strongest, most repeatable link of the four.
- Macro → AI. (Capital bridge.) AI's buildout is funded by the same liquidity. Cheap credit + abundant capital = data center construction, GPU purchases, model training. A tight-credit environment directly slows AI capex. The AI "supercycle" narrative is only as durable as the money behind it.
- AI → Macro. (Productivity bridge, slow.) As AI makes services cheaper, it puts structural downward pressure on wages and inflation in knowledge work. That's a deflationary force on the macro side — which, paradoxically, makes it easier for central banks to cut rates, which feeds back into M2. This is the slowest, most subtle of the four links, and the one most people miss.
- AI → Bitcoin. (Settlement bridge.) Autonomous agents, tokenized compute, on-chain payments — the crypto layer is the coordination and settlement infrastructure the AI economy needs to run borderless. Slower to develop, but structurally important.
The first two are fast (play out in days to months) and dominate the news cycle. The last two are slow (years) and dominate the long-term thesis. A complete view needs both.
How to actually read a news headline
Here's the payoff: given a random macro headline, here's how to place it in the system.
- "Fed cuts 50bp" → Liquidity easing → risk-on for both AI capex and Bitcoin. Macro→both.
- "M2 growth re-accelerating to 6%" → The fuel is back → the strongest structural tailwind for crypto over the next 6–12 months. Macro→Bitcoin.
- "New frontier AI model, 10x cheaper inference" → Productivity deflation intensifies → long-term macro pressure but a short-term AI-capex boom. AI→macro (both directions).
- "DXY rising sharply" → Dollar strength → usually a headwind for both Bitcoin and gold. Direct macro signal.
- "Bitcoin ETF sees record inflows" → Not a macro cause but a macro effect — it's the expression of the liquidity cycle showing up in a new asset. Don't read it as news; read it as a symptom.
Every morning, before you look at any asset price, ask yourself one question: "Is this a macro signal, or a macro effect?" If it's a signal (M2, rates, CPI), it tells you about the future. If it's an effect (ETF flows, altcoin moves, "hype"), it's telling you about the recent past — the market's reaction to signals that already happened. Acting on effects is chasing; acting on signals is leading. That single reframe is why the macro cluster is the keystone of this whole system.
The regime map
Combining M2 and the rate direction gives you a simple 2×2 map of "where are we?"
Rows = money supply · Cols = rate policy
| Rates cutting / low | Rates rising / high | |
|---|---|---|
| M2 rising | Full expansion. Strongest risk-on. Both AI and BTC benefit. The "everything rises" market of 2020–21. | Late expansion. Money is flowing but expensive. Quality and real usage outperform pure speculation. |
| M2 flat / falling | Early recovery. Rates have just turned, money is responding. Often the best risk/reward for aggressive positioning. | Tightening. Both money and rates against you. Risk-off. Quality falls, speculation breaks. 2022. |
You don't need to know the exact cell — you need to know which row and which side. That's the "bias" your entire positioning should be built on.
